The group began in the fall of 2000 with seven men: Dale Cowart, Wes Henderson, Alan Wilkerson, Tim Martin, Devin Swindle, Dennis Tindall and Bruce Caldwell.

“I guess First Day had its genesis at a Men’s Retreat at Camp Galilee" Tim recalls. “The seven of us just gathered around a big oak tree and started singing hymns. We all grew up singing a cappella in church, so we picked out a part and just harmonized!”

The group ‘debuted’ at a Valentine banquet, and shortly thereafter sang at a teacher appreciation banquet at a local church; they began to receive requests to perform at other events in other areas. “It just kind of snowballed as we began to be invited to sing for more events.” says Tim Martin “ We all decided that God wanted us to use our talents for more than just entertainment and sing at more than just church functions as a ministry to those who may not know Christ.”

    ...changes...

In November 2003, bass-baritone singer Dennis Tindall resigned due to overwhelming commitments at home. After his departure, First Day decided to rearrange its harmonies for the new 6-man format.

In April, 2005 First Day added First Tenor Matt Nunnally of Searcy, Arkansas, to replace Alan Wilkerson, who moved  to the Nashville area. Matt brings experience and amazing talent to First Day, with his years of singing with Glorify Him and more recently, Acappella.

Kyle Jones joined First Day’s ministry mid year 2005. He wields unbelievable talent, providing vocal percussion at  First Day’s live events and on its studio recordings.

    ...more changes...

Over a span of three months from December ‘05 to February ‘06, two more founding members (cousins Dale Cowart and Wes Henderson) decided that family commitments had become too overwhelming to continue singing with First Day. “When I missed two of my son’s football games in one month, I knew I had to make a decision. It was an easy one”, Wes said, “Family always comes first. I love singing, and there’s nobody I’d rather sing with than my First Day brothers, but these boys of mine will be grown up and gone before I can blink!”

Jeff Henig joined First Day in August of 2006, replacing Dale Cowart; he is an incredibly talented bass singer, and rounds out the First Day family with his terrific talent and a wonderful heart!

    ...still more changes...

In January of 2010, lead singer Devin Swindle was forced to resign after battling voice issues for 6 months; he is sorely missed, but continues his ministry as pulpit minister at Highway Church of Christ in Judsonia and Bible Professor at Harding University!

Founding member Bruce Caldwell announced his retirement from First Day in June 2012.  He continues to serve as bookkeeper/advisor/buswasher, but we miss him tons!

Dave Daughety replaced Bruce in late 2012, bringing a ton of 'band' experience!  He toured with Matt (GH and Shepherd Hall) through the 90s and is thrilled to rejoin his old high school friend... and we are THRILLED to have him!

    ...the ministry...

In August 2003, First Day teamed up with A Cappella recording artist “The Vocal Union” in Mountain Home for a concert benefiting the local Christian Clinic; the following month the group opened for contemporary Christian recording artist “Chosen Few” at the Baxter County Fair. Following this exposure, First Day was chosen as one of the “Showcase” musical groups at the 2004 Arkansas Fair Manager’s Association Convention in Hot Springs.  In 2005, the Group joined Selah at the Come Together Around Jesus event in Mtn Home, and began a 3 year engagement at Silver Dollar City, singing at their Festival of American Music in October.  After opening for Christian Comedian Mike Williams at a Fayetteville Benefit Concert in the fall of '08, First Day was invited to sing on the Music Boat Cruise in May 2009 with Contemporary Christian artists TobyMac, MercyMe, Barlow Girl, Jars of Clay, 33 Miles, Matthew West and the David Crowder Band... and opened for Lincoln Brewster in early March 2010... and it was a BLAST!   FD also completed its first foreign tour / mission effort in early June of 2010...  then traveled to San Francisco for a west coast swing, followed by an opening gig for Mark Lowry! FD completed its 2nd foreign tour / mission trip in June 2013 to Dominican Republic!!

(to be continued... because God just continues to open amazing doors!)

    ...looking ahead...

First Day continues to book as a 5-man vocal group, ministering to crowds from 25 to 10,000! “We don’t know what God has in store, but we feel blessed to be a vessel for His message!”

                                  God Bless!
